International students are required to take the TOEFL or the IELTS exam by the University of Oregon Graduate School and by the Physics Department, so we cannot waive this requirement, nor can we grant admission before one of these exams is taken. Students from non-English-speaking countries are required to demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The Department of Physics minimum acceptable TOEFL total scores are 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based), and 100 (internet-based). These scores are higher than the University of Oregon minimum scores. Note that the University of Oregon Office of Admissions requires an original (official) copy of your TOEFL/IELTS results if you are admitted, but for now, just upload an unofficial copy with your application along with your transcripts on the last page of the application form. In addition to the TOEFL/IELTS, a SPEAK test may be required when you arrive on campus. English-proficiency requirements are waived for students who have completed a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited U.S. institution or from an institution in one of the following countries: Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom.
