Applicants to the PhD program must have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree appropriate to advanced interdisciplinary graduate study, show evidence of wide knowledge of American life and thought, and have an interest in interdisciplinary approaches to the study of American culture and society. Many students accepted into the doctoral program have received BA or MA degrees in American Studies. The admissions committee will also consider individuals with degrees in such fields as Anthropology, Art History, English, Government and Politics, History, Journalism, Psychology, and Sociology, if they have had a strong emphasis in American materials.

If your scores do not meet the minimum requirements (click HERE for PDF) you will be required to take a placement test through the Maryland English Institute (MEI). Based on this placement examination, it may be determined that: - The student has satisfactory English language proficiency. - The student needs more English language training, requiring successful completion of the semi-intensive English Language course at MEI. - The student needs to complete a full-time intensive English language program before being admitted to the academic program. - Students who need further English must enroll in the required course during their first semester of study at the University.
