Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency which exceeds the minimum defined by the Graduate School Memorandum #8. Several means of demonstrating English language proficiency can be found in Memorandum #8. If test scores are submitted, the following minimum scores must be met for an application to be reviewed: TOEFLiBT: 100, with each sub score of at least 25. Only scores less than two years old at the application deadline will be accepted. Scores must be sent directly to the UW by the Educational Testing Service using institution code 4854; there is no department code needed. If you are submitting your US degree as proof of English language proficiency, additional steps may be required, such as an interview. We no longer accept IELTS scores.

Applicants are encouraged to submit GRE scores, especially if the baccalaureate degree was some years ago and/or if the baccalaureate GPA does not reflect current academic ability. Most applicants and most successful applicants submit GRE scores. Reasons why you would not necessarily need to submit GRE scores include a recent and high GPA from a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree and/or a strong design or product development portfolio.
